Resistindo à Opressão

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, African-American Rosa Parks refused to obey the bus driver's order (then following both state and municipal laws) that she give up her seat in the colored section to a white passenger, after the white section was filled.

Though arrested and prosecuted, that didn't stop the anti-racist movement across the country of gathering momentum: the massive majority of black people in town adhered to a boycott to the buses (amounting to enormous profit losses to the bus company) that would last more than a year - until the abhorrent laws were finally eliminated.

Her legacy as "The First Lady of Civil Rights" proves to be as current as it can be, inspiring people through the generations, as President Obama himself, seen here inside the now-famous bus No. 2857, now displayed at the Henry Ford Museum. 

Em 1 de dezembro de 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, a afro-americana Rosa Parks recusou-se a obedecer as ordens do motorista (então cumprindo leis estadual e municipal) para que ela cedesse seu lugar na seção negra do ônibus à um passageiro branco, após a ala branca do ônibus lotar.

Apesar de presa e condenada, isso não evitou que o movimento anti-racismo ganhasse força no país: a grande maioria da população negra em Montgomery aderiu a um boicote aos ônibus (levando a empresa de transportes a enormes prejuízos) que durou mais de um ano, até que as famigeradas leis fossem abolidas de vez.

Hoje seu legado como a "Primeira-Dama dos Direitos Humanos" repercurte como mais moderno que nunca, inspirando pessoas como o Presidente Obama, aqui sentado no famoso ônibus nr. 2857, em exibição no Museu Henry Ford.

The Three Queens

The new queen of Great Britain & Ireland, Princess Elizabeth, awaits alongside her grandmother, Queen Mary, and her mother Queen Elizabeth The Mother, by the chapel where her father King George VI's body will be soon laid in state, on this bleak winter day in February 1952 in Windsor, England. 

Though trained since their infancy to not show their emotions in public, this rare glimpse tells us another story: one can really see, through their veils, the poignancy in their countenances.

Young Keystone Press photographer Ron Case was just on the right spot (he'd later claim in a interview to Amateur Photographer magazine that, as he'd been assigned in the last minute, he got there quite late, and the other photographers had already taken the best spots) so it was a case of using a very long telephoto lens (leaning on a a few milk crates he'd borrow from a police canteen) and hope for the best. 

By the iconic symbol this image achieved along the years, it looks like he got it totally right. Incidents such as the only existing glass plate being accidentally broken to pieces by an editor didn't stop the image (thankfully dutifully duplicated before the incident) from making into the first pages of newspapers and magazines all over the world, the following day! 

Case is quoted as saying he didn't make a penny out of it, besides the 1 guinea (about 40 dollars in today's money) he  automatically got per published photograph; as the rights to the photograph belonged to his employer, the Keystone Press Agency.

A nova rainha da Grã Bretanha, e ainda não coroada princesa Elizabeth, aguarda ao lado da avó, a Rainha Mary e a mãe, Rainha Elizabeth Mãe, em frente à capela onde chegará em seguida o corpo do pai, o Rei George VI, neste frio dia de inverno em fevereiro de 1952, em Windsor, Inglaterra.

 Apesar de treinadas desde a infância a jamais demonstrar sentimentos em público, vê-se claramente nesta que foi a única fotografia do evento a ter realmente capturado o momento, que seus rostos, vistos claramente através dos véus, nos contam uma outra estória.

O jóvem fotógrafo da Agência Keystone, Ron Case, estava no lugar certo na hora certa, pois, como ele declararia mais tarde em entrevista à revista Amateur Photographer, ele havia sido designado pelo editor na última hora, e consequentemente, chegou ao local  tarde e, devido aos outros fotógrafos terem à essa altura ocupado as melhores posições, sua única escolha era usar uma longa teleobjetiva (apoiada em engradados de garrafas de leite emprestados de um refeitório da polícia) e cruzar os dedos! 

Devido ao status icônico que a imagem adquiriu ao longo dos anos, parece que ele fez a escolha certa! Incidentes à parte (como a quebra do único do negativo de vidro da foto!) não impediram que a imagem (já devidamente duplicada antes do acidente) fizesse a primeira página de jornais e revistas do mundo inteiro, no dia seguinte. 

Porém ele alega jamais ter feito um centavo extra com a foto, além dos 21 shillings (hoje, cerca de 40 dólares) que lhe eram de  direito, por foto publicada; por causa dos direitos autorais serem propriedade exclusiva de seu empregador, a Agência Keystone.
